Special Edition of World Interiors Day Video

HKIDA celebrated the special day of World Interiors Day 2013 by launching a video summarizing the fruitful events initiated from WID 2012.  In response to the theme of WID 2012 “Finding the New in the Old”, the HKIDA initiated a series of educational events which kicked off on WID 2012 (26 May 2012), when the HKIDA led over 30 interior design students and practitioners on a tour of the Tai O Heritage Hotel, a revitalized heritage building that was recently opened. In the next phase of the project, participating students worked with four well-known interior design firms on installation projects related to the theme. They underwent the research, design and production of their installations and their products were finally exhibited in October, 2012 at apm Shopping Mall, a busy shopping centre in the heart of urban Kowloon, Hong Kong. A public forum entitled “Dialogue with Designers” which allowed dialogue and discussion between public, designers and students, was also held at the exhibition opening. The exhibition was a great success, attracting over 2 million visitors. This video provided a fabulous highlight to the series of World Interiors Day-inspired events. If you missed it, watch it now!

Industry Guidelines for Hong Kong Interior Design

We initiates a project entitled “Industry Guideline for the Hong Kong interior design industry”. This guideline is a professional handbook for interior design practitioners that will list in detail the skills and knowledge that such practitioners should possess. The research and writing of the Industry Guideline for the Hong Kong interior design industry is funded by the Hong Kong government’s CreateHK scheme, and the research will be carried out by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The idea for the writing of an Industry Guideline came about during our previous research project, Survey on the 2Es of Interior Design in Hong Kong: Education and Experience, which was completed in 2011. This survey collected vital figures and data on the state of interior design in Hong Kong, and which concluded and recommended that an Industry Guideline should be written so that Hong Kong interior design practitioners can standardize their knowledge and seek to raise their professional standards.

This project is expected to last 12 months. In writing the Industry Guideline for the Hong Kong interior design industry, the research team will conduct research with local practitioners including focus groups and on-line questionnaires. We hope that interior design companies and practitioners will contribute their knowledge and opinion for this important project for the local interior design industry.

IFI Update

Most people would agree that great Interiors inherently uplift the human spirit while supporting and optimizing human behavior. These environments are imbued with meaning while providing context and relevance. Designers of such spaces intrinsically assume the responsibility to imaginatively envision and actualize places which are functional, beautiful and successful. Most people would also agree that these kinds of places need to become a majority and that, generally speaking, our designed interiors are required to meet the above criteria.
