APIDA 2011
The Call for Entries of the APIDA was closed. We would like to thank all entrants for their supports. This year, we are glad to have received more than 500 entries. Entries have to go through two rounds of judging during end of September and October. Local judging panel selected best ten entries from each category to become the finalists for the second round judging process by international judges. Seat reservation on the Awards Presentation & Gala Dinner, which will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 22 November 2011, is available now. It will be a marvelous evening that will gather top interior designers in the region as well as suppliers and contractors in town. To witness the award-winning moment and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the HKIDA with us, be quick to fill out the reservation form now!

	20^th Anniversary Professional Roundtable & Members Networking Series - Adaptive Reuse Design in Hong Kong Following by the success of “Sustainable Design in the Profession”, which was the first in our series of networking events this year, we organised the second event “Adaptive Reuse Design in Hong Kong” with Poggenpohl as the venue sponsor on 29 July. Guest speakers Dr Hoyin Lee, Vice President of Hong Kong Institute of Architectural Conservationists and Mr. Barrie Ho, MH, Founder and Director of Barrie Ho Architecture Interiors Ltd, gave talks and shared experiences with over 60 attendants. New members also presented their works and awarded with membership certificate in this special occasion.

“Interior Design X Air Con” Crossover Contest 2011
What if, Air-Con is designed by Interior Designer?
This contest is organized by Fujitsu General and co-organized by HKIDA, aims at encouraging Hong Kong interior designers to use their imagination to re-design what an air-con could be at home. The submission period is from 26 September 2011 to 30 November 2011. The winner’s design will be published in the famous design magazine – Wallpaper!

2Es of Interior Design Survey
The second Interior Design Roundtable was held at the Innocentre on 23 July 2011. The purpose of this Roundtable meeting was to review the findings from the recently completed surveys on interior design education and experience in Hong Kong. These surveys are the result of the hard work conducted by our research team over the past six months, which yielded a great deal of information such as the number and content of interior design programs, number of interior design companies and practitioners, scope of work for these companies and their range of income.

The Roundtable comprised prominent professionals and educators, including Mr. Leslie Lu of HKDI, Ms. Louisa Young of the Carittas Bianchi College of Careers, Ms. Winnie Ng of C01, Mr. Iceman Leung of the Hong Kong Design Community, Mr. Jason Hung of Smartwill Education Center, Mr. Arthur Lo of HKU Space, Mr. Ivan Dai of LRF Designers Ltd., Mr. Patrick Leung of PAL Designers and Mr. Antony Chan of CREAM. Roundtable members made a number of useful recommendations to improve interior design education and profession in Hong Kong, which will be included in a report to be published in November 2011.

Upcoming Events

East Gathering SEOUL, 13 & 14 Oct
HKIDA co-organised a cross-cultural event “East Gathering”. Spatial design professionals from Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul gathered to present a series of design events, including forum, workshop and exhibition.

East Gathering was held successfully in Hong Kong and Tokyo respectively in Dec 2010 and Feb 2011. Over 1,000 participants were drawn to the episodes. The EG now comes to its third destination - Seoul. Followed by the Welcome Party on 13 October, the Tri-city Talk Session would be held at the Conference Hall of Ferrum Tower on 14 Oct. Speakers include Ryu Kosaka (Japan), KEIKO+MANAU (Japan), Mah Young Beom (Korea), Yoo Jeong Han (Korea), Kinney Chan (Hong Kong) and Antony Chan (Hong Kong). More exchanges and interactions will be continued between the three cities.

Let’s gather at Taipei for IDA Congress and XXVth IFI General Assembly 2011
It’s time for designers around the world gathered together! The upcoming IDA World Design Congress (24-26 Oct) and XXVth IFI General Assembly meeting (27-28 Oct) will be held in Taipei, Taiwan. The themes of “Design at the Edges”, the fields of “Economic Development”, “The Internet”, “Biotechnology”, “Urbanism” and “International Migration” will be addressed in the IDA Congress. The IFI General Assembly Meeting will elect the IFI Executive Board for the 2011-2013 term, and there will also be the voting on the nominations for the World Interiors Day theme for 2012 & 2013.

HKIA 55th Anniversary Conference “megalopolis and architecture”
Themed “Megalopolis and Architecture”, the HKIA 55th Anniversary Conference, will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 5 Nov 2011. It will explore the development of Megalopolis and its components – the architecture with particular reference to Hong Kong Pearl River Delta region and other similar developments in the world.
