The Interiors Entity (DFIE) Global Symposium

The IFI Design Frontiers: The Interiors Entity (DFIE) Global Symposium, was held in New York City in February 2011. It received unequivocal support of IFI members and was fully endorsed by leading national design groups and associations.

Reports were presented from Think Tank leaders representing the work of many professionals in Hong Kong, Germany, Turkey, Argentina, USA, Brazil and Russia and Europe. The participants also addressed fundamental questions raised about the Interiors discipline: value, relevance, responsibility, business, culture, knowledge and identity.

The Symposium culminated in the signing of a formal IFI Interiors Declaration, a first in the history of our profession. The Declaration formed an unanimous agreement establishing the essential foundations and their advancement for Interior Architecture/Design Worldwide. The ideas contained in the Declaration provide clear goals for and affect the fundamental understanding and shaping of our practice, its education and research, and for the outcomes required of our built environment in support of humanity, society and culture.

Upcoming Events
2Es of Interior Design Survey Commences

HKIDA is sponsoring the "2Es of Interior Design Survey, Interior Design Experience and Education in Hong Kong," and this project is now under way. This will be the first industry-wide survey on the interior design industry in Hong Kong, and will yield valuable insight into the interior design industry and education in Hong Kong.

The "education" part of the survey will attempt to investigate the course syllabus, teaching staff, student numbers and composition as well as graduates' prospects at various educational institutions in Hong Kong offering courses in interior design. The "experience" portion will find out the number of practitioners and companies involved in interior design in Hong Kong, their scope of work, present difficulties and future aspirations for the industry.

The data collected in this survey is crucial to setting future policies for the industry and help professionalizing interior design in Hong Kong. In the coming weeks, questionnaires will be sent to various educational institutions and interior design companies. It is hoped that institutions, company executives and practitioners will take part in this survey by providing relevant data, and in the process improve the interior design profession.
